What kind of lessons do you offer?
Private lessons for students ages 10 through adult, last one hour and may consist of voice or acting, or a combination of both. Prior to beginning study with Dolly, students must audition for placement in the studio. 30 minute lessons are also available.

How is a vocal coach different from a voice teacher?
Primarily, a vocal coach finds and teaches repertoire, and helps the student develop style and interpretation (i.e. acting the song). A voice teacher concentrates on technique (support, voice placement, breathing, posture, range expansion, etc.). Simply stated, a voice teacher teaches you how to sing. A vocal coach teaches you how to develop what you’ve got and build repertoire. Dolly will be teaching a blend of the two, plus sight-reading skills and ‘tricks of the trade’.

Why is an assessment necessary?
An initial assessment will allow Dolly to gain insight to the student’s current abilities and strengths, as well as identify areas needing improvement. For singing, the raw mechanics of the voice must be present in order to experience growth. Acting is a craft that emerges from the core of who you are inside. To perform in musical theatre, you must learn how to blend both disciplines. Therefore, in the assessment, Dolly will consider vocal production (singing) and song interpretation (acting). Additionally, there is a mutual opportunity for teacher and prospective student to assess teacher-student personality fit. It is of utmost importance to have a good, working relationship which should inspire the student to be highly productive in the setting of private lessons.

How will lessons be accompanied?
For the majority of singing lessons, Dolly will accompany the students. As Cabaret dates approach, a professional accompanist will come in to play for students.

Are there any materials I will need to bring to lessons?
Yes. You will need to bring a spiral notebook for recording lesson activity and assignments, and a tape recorder for recording parts of lessons and song accompaniments.

Will practice outside of lessons be necessary?
YES, it will be required. Each week you will be given things to work on or practice for the next week. If a pattern of not practicing develops, Dolly will speak with you about your commitment to growth and membership in the studio.

How can I practice at home if I don’t have a piano or can’t play it?
For these students, the required tape recorder will be most beneficial. The accompaniment for songs will be recorded by Dolly, or provided via a karaoke arrangement. Remember, this is a learning tool only.
